Virtual Office Hack: Reduce Stress By Singing

23 Apr 2019

Work can be stressful. You may love the work that you do, but there are times when stress can catch up with you, and that is not a good feeling to have. Well, here is a life hack that you can use – singing. Yes, singing is not just for the shower or for Friday night karaoke sessions. Singing can be your armour when battling against stress. So you better start warming up all of those vocal chords. You may even suggest this to your co-employees in your virtual office. Another good thing about singing while at work as a remote worker would be that nobody is going to hear you since you would be working at home, especially if you are not so fond of your singing voice.

So why should you go and start belting out those tunes while you are working as a virtual worker? Well, a study has been recently done about this, and the results have shown that singing helps reduce stress among virtual workers. It also allows them to feel not so lonely, which is a common problem among remote workers.

The study that has been done

The University of Leicester in the United Kingdom has researched this. Headed by Dr. Catherine Steele and her partner, Joanna Foster, they delved into the connection of singing and stress at work. Steele and Foster are from the University’s Department of Neuroscience, Psychology, and Behaviour. Their study has shown that singing really has an effect on lowering the amount of stress that comes from work. It also seems to help out those remote workers deal with the feeling of loneliness and isolation.

According to the research that was done, around 96% of the total participants had claimed that they felt a reduced amount of stress even if they were working remotely. The study also had gotten an 86% response from the respondents saying that they were feeling a lot less lonely because they were singing while at work. It is also important to note that the study included a total of 58 individuals who were working with different businesses, were working remotely, connected to a variety of businesses, and also were introduced to singing while at work.

Comments by the researchers

On the study that they have done, Foster had commented that studies done previously have shown that singing with a group is actually good for a person’s mental health as well as physical health. The reason for pushing in with the study is that they wanted to look into how singing would actually affect people in the workplace. The research had surely shown that singing has helped reduce the stress levels of people who may be feeling stressed out with their workload.

The people behind the study are surely happy to share that they do recommend people to try out singing with this kind of effect it has on them. It surely is a really good way to de-stress that does not need physical activity and also does not even need you to spend any money.
