Tips on how to start your business YouTube channel

20 Apr 2021

There are plenty of ways how business owners can promote and advertise their business. For example, Facebook pages, websites, online advertising, however there is one platform that despite having over 2 billion users, is only utilized by 9% of small businesses – YouTube! With marketing trends shifting towards videos over text and images, YouTube can be a powerful, yet simple enough tool in the market toolbelt of small businesses.

Why should I use YouTube?

YouTube is a video sharing platform that has over 2 billion users from all around the world. Each day, it gets over 30 million visits. Videos are really effective tools in marketing and are growing in popularity and engagement-wise, videos cannot be beat.

How does one start a business YouTube channel?

To run a successful YouTube account that drives traffic to your website to increase revenues, business owners and marketing managers should develop a YouTube strategy. We will address this in a subsequent post, however today we will simply look at the basics of setting up your YouTube Business account.

Create a business account on YouTube

Using your work email (or the one you will be using for all your business-related content) create/sign into your YouTube Account. Click on your account’s avatar and click on “Create a Channel” and choose “Use a custom name” and then follow the instructions to complete the creation of your business channel.

Personalize the profile

Once an account and channel has been created on YouTube, business owners should make sure that the profile is customized to give your viewers an accurate description of your business and services along with a quick description of what the audience can expect to see on the channel. Business owners can also add links to the website as well as other social media platforms used by the business.

Show off some art

Take the opportunity to build brand recognition on YouTube, include your logo and relevant art/pictures on your channel to build a good and lasting impression on your viewers. Use the banner to catch people’s attention without being too wordy that it becomes crowded. You can add links to your banner – but only up to a total of 5 so make sure you choose wisely – popular options include a link to your website and to your social media platforms.

The About Section

The first few sentences are the most important – so ensure that you call out to your target audience so they know your channel is relevant to them and include what value your channel will bring to them. You can include relevant links here too – perhaps to your services/products that you think appropriate for viewers on YouTube and most importantly – contact information!

We will address how to create your YouTube Marketing Strategy in a separate blog, but hopefully these tips will help small business owners get started so that you can take advantage of the millions of users on YouTube to generate revenue and brand recognition for your business.
